Scott Chaurette
Scott Chaurette enjoys a varied career as a conductor, bassist, teacher, composer, and arranger. The founder and music director of the Seven Hills Symphony, Mr. Chaurette has led the community orchestra through a period of overwhelming growth. In addition to performing full concert seasons, the SHS sponsors a yearly youth concerto competition and fosters educational partnerships with surrounding school districts allowing local students easy access to orchestral music. The Seven Hills Symphony has grown to become a staple of community music in central Massachusetts. In addition to his work with the Seven Hills Symphony, Scott is the orchestra director at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs Connecticut where he leads one of the top orchestral programs in the state and directs the EOS Youth Symphony, the region’s youth orchestra. For the last two years, Scott has been the assistant conductor of the University of Connecticut Symphony Orchestra.
An accomplished double bassist, Scott has performed throughout the United States with a variety of ensembles including the Portland Symphony, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, New Hampshire Symphony, Boston Philharmonic, and the Illinois Symphony. He has held the position of Principal Bass with the New Bedford Symphony, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, and the Symphony by the Sea Chamber Orchestra. The grand prizewinner at the 1999 International Fame Festival Solo Double Bass Competition, he has been featured in recital and as a soloist with ensembles throughout the country. Scott is currently Double Bass Instructor at the University of Connecticut.
A committed music educator, Scott has been a judge for Connecticut regional festivals, the Connecticut All-State Festival, Massachusetts Central District Festival, and the New England Music Festival. He frequently leads string sectionals and masterclasses at many of these festivals. For the past two years he has served as chair of the Connecticut All-State Orchestra.
Scott holds a BM from the Boston Conservatory and an MM from the University of Illinois. He is currently pursuing additional graduate study in conducting at the University of Connecticut. His principal conducting teachers have included Toshiyuki Shimada, Jeffery Renshaw, and Peter Sacco, and his double bass teachers have included Lawrence Wolfe, Shigeru Ishikawa, Joseph Holt, Michael Cameron, and Donald Howey. His compositions and arrangements are published by BassScores Editions.
